Roger Williams Calls for Tourism Boost in Rural Wales

During culture questions in the House of Commons Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, raised the important issue of tourism in rural Wales to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Roger Williams has been campaigning on boosting tourism in Brecon and Radnorshire and asked the Secretary of State what we can do to encourage VisitBritain to highlight the great accommodations and attractions in Brecon and Radnor.

Roger Williams is also campaigning for a VAT reduction on tourist accommodation and attractions. This has been achieved in 24 (soon to be 25) out of 28 countries in the European Union. Experiences in these countries show that a reduction in VAT would mean more people taking holidays and breaks and so the overall tax revenue would increase.

Commenting Roger Williams MP for Brecon and Radnorshire said:

“It is absolutely vital that we improve opportunities for the tourism industry in rural areas in Wales. My constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire has so much to offer. But we need to take further initiatives to highlight the excellent facilities and improve conditions for tourism businesses.

“I am so pleased that Katherine Jenkins will lead the VisitBritain’s Countryside is GREAT Campaign in New York.  The theme will be that visitors from abroad should visit the countryside as well as our cities.  I cannot think of a better advert for the Welsh Countryside than the Welsh Songstress Katherine Jenkins.  I shall be following the event to see what benefits accrue to Wales”

During Cultural Questions in the House of Commons, Roger Williams asked:

Tourism is particularly important in rural areas. What can we do to encourage VisitBritain to highlight the excellent hotels, holiday accommodation and visitor attractions in rural Wales, and indeed the entire west of England, to make it a tourist destination for people coming from abroad?

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Mr. Sayid Javid replied:

My hon. Friend is right to say that tourism is vital for local economies, and I have a big ambition to get more people out of the cities and visiting our fantastic countryside. He will be pleased to know that one week from today we will launch the Countryside is Great campaign in New York, with the fantastic Katherine Jenkins performing. That will help make clearer to international tourists exactly what our fantastic countryside has to offer, including in Wales.
