The Welsh Liberal Democrat-Green Group on Powys County Council has raised the alarm about a proposed 25% cut in funding for community arts organisations in the upcoming budget.

The draft proposals could herald a further period of uncertainty and tightened belts at important local institutions such as Brecon’s Theatr Brycheiniog, as well as harming smaller groups.

Glasbury Cllr and Welsh Lib Dem-Green Group Leader, James Gibson-Watt commented:

“A cut of up to a quarter of an organisation’s budget will have an impact on the range of services, performances and opportunities they can offer to their communities, risks job losses or the attractiveness of working locally in this sector, and harms our local economy by weakening our cultural offer to visitors.

“Last year the Welsh Lib Dem-Green Group successfully passed our budget amendment that saved £90,000 for local arts and cultural organisations that were facing a £133,000 cut which threatened the viability of many.

“It is disappointing that the Tory/Independent Council are planning to inflict damage and uncertainty all over again.”
