Welsh Lib Dem MP for Brecon & Radnorshire has called upon Hereford Hospital to take on government advice and reduce their charges for parking at Hereford Hospital.
The Coalition Government has called upon hospitals to reduce or abolish their charges at their car parks. For many years now parking at Welsh hospitals has been free but across the border this is not the case. With new services and investment being put into Hereford Hospital such as top of the range radiotherapy unit, more Welsh patients are expected to cross the border to use services in England.
Roger Williams, the Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon & Radnorshire, said:
“For many years now patients in Wales and their families have benefitted from free parking at hospitals. This has not been the case for many patients having to make trips to English hospitals. With charges as high as £15 for 24 hours, Hereford Hospital is one of the most expensive in the UK to park at.
“I recently welcomed the announcement that the new radiotherapy unit would be opening at Hereford Hospital. However I fear that with such state of the art facilities many more patients will end up feeling the sting of this so called “sick tax” as they are sent to this fantastic new facility. Free at the point of service is the foundation of the NHS and parking charges remain a direct affront to this.”
